The Cleveland Browns’ search for a new head coach has come to an end. The Browns have hired Todd Monken, who is the former offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens and has decades of coaching experience, for the job.
The Browns moved on from Kevin Stefanski earlier this month after they went 5-12 for the season and missed the playoffs. In his six years with the franchise, they went to the playoffs twice but weren’t able to do much else in the postseason.
Monken now joins as a first-time NFL coach. The only other time he served as a head coach was from 2013 to 2015 for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Monken has two national titles on his resume from his time with the Georgia Bulldogs as their offensive coordinator.
Now, the question is whether Todd Monken is the coach the Cleveland Browns needed? Is he the solution to all the problems the franchise has faced in recent years? And, is Todd Monken a good coach?
Is Todd Monken a Good Coach?
If we look at his career, there’s no NFL experience and consistency with a team to give a direct answer to that question. Since he has never been an NFL coach before, it’s nearly impossible to predict whether he’ll be a good head coach for the Browns.
In Monken’s last year as a head coach for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, he went 9-5, which was a massive turnaround from the previous state of the program. Other than that, the head coaching experience is non existent.
There have been coaches who have changed the outlook of franchises without having any prior experience. Monken has the potential to be that coach for the Cleveland Browns when the next season starts.
The bar isn’t very high in Cleveland right now. They have gone through a rough phase and have had more losses than wins in multiple seasons. So, that will give Monken some breathing space before pressure starts mounting.
Another thing that could work in his favor is the familiarity with the franchise. Monken previously worked with the Cleveland Browns in 2019 as their offensive coordinator. It was a very short stint, but it indicates that Monken knows the organization he’ll be working for.
As a position coach for multiple NFL franchises, Monken showed growth each year. So, there are things that work in his favor. However, the true quality of his coaching ability can only be proved once he takes charge next season.
