Victor Wembanyama put up a masterclass performance in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both teams finished in the top two in the West with OKC leading the chart on a 64-18 record.
The San Antonio Spurs are coming off a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in the semis. The Thunder, on the other hand, swept the Los Angeles Lakers in four straight games to secure their place in the Conference Finals.
This is a highly anticipated series between the reigning, back-to-back league MVP and defending NBA Champion, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Wemby, who is nicknamed ‘the Alien’ because of his 7’4, 235 lb frame.
As expected, it was a thrilling matchup, and it went into double overtime. In the end, San Antonio walked away with a 122-115 win. Wemby dropped 41 points, shooting 14 of 25 from the field, with 24 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and three blocks.
It was one of the best postseason performances ever. Wemby completely dominated the game on both ends and helped his team secure a 1-0 lead in the series. The fans were hyped to see Wemby’s performance on Oklahoma’s home court.
Wemby also managed to impress the Kansas City Chiefs superstar, Patrick Mahomes, who has signed a 10-year, $450 million contract extension with the franchise.
“Wemby Man…. Unbelievable!” Mahomes posted on X with a flexed biceps emoji.
Mahomes is still recovering from the ACL and LCL tear in his left knee. The Chiefs will need him back on the field in Week 1 next season, but his availability isn’t confirmed yet.
When Is Patrick Mahomes Expected To Return
The Chiefs have made it clear that they are not going to rush Mahomes back if he isn’t completely ready for games. However, his progress has been remarkable, and he’s on track to be ready during the Week 1 matchup.
ESPN Senior Insider Adam Schefter recently opened up about Mahomes’ recovery during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
“Is he gonna be 80%, 90%, 100%? Like that’s hard to imagine that he could just step in there right away after such a significant knee injury and pick up right where he left off and be as great as he’s always been,” he said.
Schefter said there will be some adjustments at least in the early stages of the season, but Mahomes has covered a lot of ground so far.
