Giants Coach John Harbaugh Backs $5,723,040 Star After Promising Rookie Season

John Harbaugh is facing a lot of pressure to reverse the New York Giants’ fortunes. In his first year, he’s expected to make progress with a roster consisting mostly of players he didn’t have any say in choosing. However, Harbaugh will have to make do. Luckily for Harbaugh, several key players showed flashes in 2025, including Cam Skattebo.

Harbaugh gave his opinion about the player in a team transcript via a Monday post from Pro Football Talk. His opinion put plenty of high expectations on the back’s shoulders.

“I thought he was just what you saw, a downhill runner, a tone-setter type runner,” Harbaugh said. “He’s a tough tackle. That’s what you look for. How many guys can make yards when they’re not supposed to make yards on their own?

“It seems to me he was that kind of guy at Arizona State and the exact same guy that I saw on tape last year. You guys know better. You watched him up close and personal. He’s a top-tier back, and he’s planning on playing that way this year.”

These are high expectations for a player on a rookie contract. Skattebo is currently playing on a four-year, $5.27 million deal, according to Spotrac. With still multiple seasons to go before any serious contract negotiations can take place, the pressure is on for the running back who earned 410 yards in 101 carries in his first season.

Cam Skattebo makes promise to NFL fans and John Harbaugh

Cam Skattebo went through what many would call a traumatic experience in suffering the injury that ended his season early. Trauma can change people, but Skattebo was clear that he will be unaffected in the long run.

The Giants running back spoke about how the injury would not change his running style in the upcoming season. In a statement on “The Insiders” via a June 17 NFL Media post, Skattebo called his injury a “little ankle thing.”

“It ain’t gonna change who I am,” he said. “I had an injury, you know, it is what it is. I’ve still got plenty of football left, plenty of life left, I’m not going to let this little ankle thing bother me. I’m going to get back (to) running people over like you see on the videos. It’s going to be normal Cam Skattebo from here on out.”

Based on what Harbaugh said, the new coach might want an upgraded version of Skattebo to help give Jaxson Dart a solid foundation.

Will Skattebo rise to the challenge?
