“There’s No Hiding”: Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell Shares Candid Reaction on J.J. McCarthy, Kyler Murray Controversy

The Vikings quarterback recently went viral for the disparity between J.J. McCarthy’s and Kyler Murray’s answers on their relationship as both of them fight for the starting role.

While McCarthy had an awkward answer about his rapport with Murray, saying it’s like two guys in a classroom sitting at opposite sides of the room, making it the coach’s responsibility to prepare them for the game.

On the other hand, Murray said that his relationship with McCarthy has been great, and since the former Michigan star is a younger guy, he’s willing to help in any way he can, given he’s got 7 years of playing experience in the league.

Reacting to the story, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told the media on Thursday that it was tough for him since he is in it and around it, highlighting that the interpretation of the comments was different than the reality.

#Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell on JJ McCarthy’s comments about his relationship with Kyler Murray:

“I didn’t make a lot out of it. I know there was some reaction to it. That’s probably not the first time there’s gonna be a reaction to those guys answering questions about the… https://t.co/S8HXNCHYsb pic.twitter.com/att5d2nuY8

“Yeah, those things are always tough for me because I’m in it. I’m around it every day. So now there’s an interpretation of those comments are going to be what they are. I would just say that in the room and the actual day-to-day, the dialogue between those guys, the interactions have been very professional. And even more so than that, it’s just been a positive room. And I think Carson has a lot to do with that as the veteran in the room. And obviously, you know. I know there was some some reaction to it. And that’s probably not the first time there’s going to be a reaction to those guys kind of, you know, answering questions about the situation. And that’s what part of the competition is all about. It’s going to be look, we’re not trying to there’s no there’s no hiding anything.” O’Connell said.

Shannon Sharpe Grills J.J. McCarthy Over Kyler Murray Comments

Many fans and analysts were left unimpressed with McCarthy’s response on his relationship with Kyler Murray, including Shannon Sharpe.

Sharpe reacted to McCarthy’s comments and said the whole reason why the Vikings brought in Murray, putting his starting role under question, is his fault.

It’s his fault. Had you played better, Kyler Murray’s services would not have been needed,” Sharpe said boldly. “The mere fact that they got Kyler Murray in there tells you everything you need to know, J.J. McCarthy.”

Sharpe then told McCarthy to stop being mad at the coach and suggested he be mad at himself, as he is the one who brought the quarterback competition on.

The analyst then predicted that McCarthy is going to be on the bench in the 2026 NFL season, taunting that it will then be awkward.
