“It’s Not Lazy”: Fans Defend Caleb Williams’ Madden 27 Cover as EA Sports Faces Harsh Criticism

Caleb Williams didn’t win the Super Bowl or win the MVP, but the face of Chicago football did win the cover of Madden 27. Williams, doing his patented jumping throw, will be the image fans see when they boot up the game or fish out the disc. As is de facto tradition, fans took to social media to call out the final result, but many fans defended the quarterback and EA’s decision.

The defense was sparked by one fan’s comment in response to an Adam Schefter post on Wednesday, which accused the company of using AI to make the cover art to cut costs.

Fans defended the final cover result, with one comparing Williams’ pose to another Chicago sports legend.

“It’s baffling to me how many people are completely unaware of why this cover is ‘plain’ It’s not ‘lazy’ or ‘uncreative,’ it’s literally a recreation of one of the most iconic Chicago sports pictures of all time,” one posted, including an image of Michael Jordan dunking to compare to Williams.

“I think it’s super dope. Has a vintage 90s sports card feel to it in my opinion. Sometimes simplicity works and it works here,” one replied.

“In that case I’m a much bigger fan of it,” another responded.

The defense was in response to much criticism about the cover art, with many fans complaining about the player choice as much as anything.

“I think the point is that in no world should Caleb Williams be compared to Jordan,” one posted.

“The cover is good, but it’s wayyyy too soon for Caleb to be the cover. He did well but cmon man there were much more deserving players. Myles Garrett broke the sack record cmon,” one added.

“I’m confused why a mid QB is there I guess? My only gripe,” another posted.

Williams threw for 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions and led his team on an 11-6 run, which was the most wins since the team went 12-4 in 2018 and only the seventh double-digit win season since 1992.
