Bill Belichick was denied first-ballot entry into the Hall of Fame after failing to get the required 40 out of 50 votes to be inducted. While that may feel like a shock to many, sports commentator Skip Bayless has presented a case for why voters might have snubbed Belichick.
Belichick won six Super Bowls as New England Patriots head coach and two more as an assistant coach. Together with quarterback Tom Brady, Belichick formed a dynasty with the Patriots. He parted ways with the franchise in January 2024 and is currently the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
On Tuesday, Bayless mentioned the number of controversies Belichick was a part of during his tenure in the NFL.
“Obviously, the main reason Bill Belichick was punished was Spygate,” Bayless said. “I mean, the winningest NFL coach ever, the great Don Shula, winner of three NFL championships and two Super Bowls, publicly called ‘Belichick’ after Spygate, in which he was busted.
“He was turned in by his former defensive coordinator, Eric Mangini, then the head coach of the Jets, who warned Belichick the week before: ‘Don’t do this to me. Don’t cheat. Don’t tape my signals so you can break them down at halftime.’ Belichick did. Eric turned him in. The rest is history.”
Bayless also mentioned the infamous Deflategate incident in 2015.
“Obviously, that mattered greatly to voters, and so did Deflategate,” Bayless added. “You cannot tell me that Bill Belichick didn’t know everything that was going on with underinflated footballs, because he knew his quarterback liked to throw slightly underinflated footballs. They all have their quirks, their pet peeves, their likes and dislikes.”
Legends Stunned By Bill Belichick Falling Short Of First Ballot Hall of Fame Induction
Several legends, including three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes and four-time NBA champion LeBron James, reacted to Bill Belichick getting snubbed from first-ballot Hall of Fame induction. Belichick himself expressed surprise over the snub, saying:
“Six Super Bowls isn’t enough?”
Meanwhile, Chiefs quarterback Mahomes wrote on X:
“Insane… don’t even understand how this could be possible.”
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James reacted:
“Man there’s no way I read that right! Right? Ain’t no WAY Bill Belichick ain’t 1st Ballot HOF!! That’s IMPOSSIBLE, EGREGIOUS, and quite frankly DISRESPECTFUL!”
While the verdict is in, it has been difficult for many to digest how the most successful NFL head coach was denied entry into the Hall of Fame.
