Many are trying to find out why voters didn’t elect Bill Belichick into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. The Hall of Fame induction results were surprising, given that the eight-time Super Bowl champion didn’t get in despite having a stellar coaching resume.
After Belichick failed to get the required number of votes to get into the Hall of Fame, former Buffalo Bills general manager Bill Polian has become a subject of speculation that claims he asked the voters to make Belichick wait for one more year as a way to punish the head coach for his alleged involvement in the Spygate incident in 2007.
However, Polian refuted those claims, calling them “totally and categorically untrue.” He said that while he heard that the proposal of making Belichick was floated among the voters, he didn’t have any opinion or influence on the same. He’s also unsure if he voted for Belichick, only saying that he voted for a coach and a player.
“I was shocked to learn Bill didn’t get in,” Polian said. “He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.”
NFL analyst Emmanuel Acho blasted Polian for being unaware or trying to hide who he voted.
“Bill Polian said he doesn’t remember if he voted for Bill Belichick or not,” Acho wrote on X. “Respectfully, if you can’t remember who you voted for, you’re too senile to be voting.”
Seeing the reactions online to Belichick’s snub, it appears the football community is not at all happy seeing the most successful head coach in NFL history being made to wait another year on what should be an obvious first ballot Hall of Fame selection.
Why Bill Polian Is Getting Blamed For Potential Involvement in Bill Belichick’s HoF Snub?
Bill Polian hasn’t been a big fan of Bill Belichick. The voters of the Pro Football Hall of Fame voting are generally NFL reporters, in addition to former general manager Polian and Tony Dungy.
Polian, during his time as general manager of the Buffalo Bills (1986-1992) and the Indianapolis Colts (1998-2009), was on the receiving end of several stunning losses against Bill Belichick.
Belichick won his second Super Bowl as the defensive coordinator against the Bills in Super Bowl XXV. His Patriots eliminated Polian’s Colts from the NFL Playoffs in 2003 and 2004.
As such, Polian has every reason to hold a grudge against Belichick and that’s why some are assuming that the former Bills executive played a dirty hand in denying Belichick’s place in the Hall of Fame.
