For two decades, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick dominated the NFL. The duo created arguably the most revered dynasty in NFL history, and they became synonymous with greatness with their six Super Bowl wins.
Brady and Belichick also won 17 division titles in their 20 years together. They’re credited with changing the game offensively, as their style became a blueprint for other NFL franchises in the years that followed.
The quarterback – head coach duo is tied together, forever. One is rarely, if ever, mentioned without the other when talking about the New England Patriots dynasty. At the same time, there has been a longstanding debate on the topic.
Who did more for the Patriots dynasty, Brady or Belichick? It’s nearly impossible to conclude without full context. However, if we go by stats alone, it becomes clear that one could have been the greatest ever without the other.
Belichick’s overall NFL head coach record stands at 333-178 in 29 seasons. In his 24 seasons with the Patriots, Belichick had 266 wins and 121 losses in the regular season. In the playoffs, he went 30-12.
With Brady as his quarterback, Belichick went 249-75, including the playoffs, making it a stellar head coaching record. But if we take arguably the greatest quarterback of all time out of the picture, Belichick holds an 84-103 record.
The numbers get even worse when we include his first head coaching stint with North Carolina, obviously without Brady. Overall, Belichick has an 88-111 record without Tom Brady, which doesn’t make him look like the greatest football coach in history.
All of his Super Bowl wins were achieved with Brady as the quarterback. Brady, on the other hand, proved that he never needed Belichick to be the greatest by winning the 2020 Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Tom Brady on Key to the Patriots Success
This has been a widely debated topic for decades. While Brady’s numbers and accomplishments, with or without Belichick and the Patriots, are undeniable, it was their pairing that made the Patriots great.
Brady himself believes that a single player or coach can’t be credited for the entire team’s success.
“It takes a great coaching staff to win. It takes great players to win,” he said. “It takes great front office support to win. It’s an organizational win. It’s an organizational loss. To ascribe a win or loss to one player — and they did that for me a lot with winning and I always say, ‘It’s not about me, it’s about us.’ And when you lose, as a leader, when you lose you take the blame and you give the credit when you win.”
At the end of the day, in Brady’s opinion, the six Super Bowls were won by the New England Patriots, which includes every player in every position, every coach, and the front office.
