Before declaring his name in this year’s NFL Draft, Miami Hurricanes defensive end Rueben Bain Jr. was involved in an almost life-altering accident that occurred a couple of years ago. On Thursday, Bain Jr. is hoping that he hears his name called in the 2026 draft.
But, before he rounded out his college football career with the Miami-based program and put his name into the draft, Bain was involved in a car crash in 2024. The accident took place at around 4 a.m. in Miami, where Bain was driving his SUV with his former teammates, Wesley Bissainthe and Nyjalik Kelly, and a woman from Georgia, Destiny Betts.
Bain’s vehicle rear-ended another car, swerved into a concrete barrier, and then ricocheted into another barrier. The crash was ultimately ruled an accident, and no further action was taken against Bain, such as a field sobriety test. Charges were eventually dropped against Bain, but unfortunately, Betts succumbed to her injuries and died three months after the crash, after she was placed in a coma.
Bain was able to return to coach Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes for his sophomore year and round out his college tenure after his third season just recently.
Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach Shared How His Team Is Viewing Rueben Bain Jr.
In an article by Armando Salguero that was published on Fox News on Wednesday, Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach shared how his team is viewing Rueben Bain Jr. in light of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Veach’s thoughts provided insight into the kind of perception franchises may be having when it comes to Bain Jr., as Veach asserted his team is fully aware of what happened and how they may handle it.
“Well, first off, we were probably aware of that at the start of the season. It happened, obviously, a few years ago. As far as that impact, look, it’s our responsibility to do our due diligence and fully vet each player as always. Like with any case, we do so with the understanding that all these cases are different and unique. This is the most important part of our job, is getting the player right. The whole body of work, what he does on the field, what he does off the field,” Veach was quoted as saying.
“And we approach it with every case is unique and different, but that’s something that, above all, is the most important part of what we do. How these guys are going to come in here, and they have to be successful on the field but also off the field,” he continued.
