Sports commentator Jason Whitlock did not enjoy the latest episode of Ryan Clark’s “The Pivot Podcast,” where the former NFL safety shared his thoughts about being cut by ESPN.
Clark got emotional on the podcast, claiming ESPN used the broader layoffs as “cover” or “camouflage” for what he believes was a targeted decision to dismiss him.
Whitlock, however, wasn’t convinced.
“I watched the entire 49 minutes of Ryan Clark talking about himself on The Pivot,” Whitlock tweeted. “He did not express a single ounce of humility. Not a single ounce. ‘Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.'”
Clark was a part of the Steelers team that won the Super Bowl in the 2008 season. He retired in 2015 and transitioned to a broadcasting career, signing with ESPN. He was a regular feature on “NFL Live,” “SportsCenter” and “First Take.”
Ryan Clark On ESPN’s Decision To Lay Him Off
ESPN attributed the mass layoffs in part to its merger with the NFL Network. The network laid off multiple personalities, including Ryan Clark and Cam Newton.
“They’re using layoffs as a cover and a camouflage for what they already intended on doing,” Clark said. “But there was no cause for it. So because there was no cause for it, you couldn’t just fire me, you had to wait ’til the layoffs so you could camouflage it and veil it.”
During the podcast, Clark said that all he ever wanted was to “be accepted”:
“When I go home … and this kid from the West Bank is so accepted in New Orleans now, I wouldn’t change that, you know, never,” Clark said. “All I ever wanted to do was be accepted. … So yeah, I wouldn’t change.”
On Friday, the former Super Bowl champion thanked his fellow panelists Mina Kimes, Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears.
“I love you Cap!! Sharing a desk with you,@minakimes,@mspears96 & @danorlovsky7 has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Clark wrote on X. “It’s not even about the trophies. It’s about the people! You’re my family, my sister, & that has nothing to do with where I do or don’t work.”
