Some Fans Aren’t Convinced as Robert Saleh’s Credentials Questioned After Titans Appointment

After months of looking for their next head coach, the Tennessee Titans have finalized Robert Saleh for the role, as per reports. Saleh started coaching in 2002 as an offensive assistant for the Michigan State Spartans.

Over the years, he changed schools, positions, and got his first NFL stint in 2006 as the defensive quality control coach for the Houston Texans. He first led a franchise in 2021 when the New York Jets hired him as head coach.

In 2024, he was fired after going 20-36 without making a playoff appearance. He last worked with the San Francisco 49ers as defensive coordinator. Now, he has landed yet another head coaching job with the Titans.

Although fans were desperate to find their next head coach, they weren’t willing to decide in haste. It seems like Saleh wasn’t even on their list, and the fans are unhappy with him being hired by the Titans.

“Not gonna be easy Coach,” a fan wrote.

“He’s gonna be upset when the 49ers win the SB next year!” a fan wrote.

“Prayers to Titans fans,” a fan wrote.

    “why man…” a fan wrote.

“Ward i feel bad for you,” a fan wrote.

“The mediocrity continues,” a fan wrote.

The fans’ frustration is justified. Saleh doesn’t have a good track record. Even though his first head coaching stint was short-lived, going 20-36 isn’t a good look on any resume. More importantly, that’s not what the Titans need.

The franchise has struggled in the last few years. This season, they registered just three wins and 14 losses to stay at the bottom of the AFC South. They haven’t been to the playoffs since 2021. Is Saleh the answer they were looking for? The fans don’t think so.

At the same time, it’s premature to judge Saleh based on his Jets stint. The least he deserves is a chance from the fans to prove himself. If the bad run continues, the Titans will fire him and look for another replacement.

Tennessee Was Without a Head Coach Since October

Brian Callahan, the former head coach of the Titans, started this season with a 1-5 record. His overall record with Tennessee was 4-19. In October, he was fired by the franchise and temporarily replaced by Mike McCoy as the interim head coach.

The Titans went almost an entire season without a head coach. So, a sense of desperation might’ve played a role in hiring Saleh.

During their search for the next head coach, the Titans were in talks with several coaches available on the market, including Mike McCarthy. After going through several rounds of interviews, they finalized Saleh for the role.
