The very first game of the 2025 NFL divisional round saw the Denver Broncos emerge victorious over the Buffalo Bills in a thrilling 33-30 overtime game at Empower Field.
This win has propelled the Denver-based franchise into the conference championship, where they will face the New England Patriots, whereas the Bills bowed out of the 2025 season with a major coaching change.
Following their loss to the Broncos, the Bills have officially parted ways with head coach Sean McDermott after a total of nine seasons with the franchise.
This news naturally caused a lot of fans to react online, with many of them citing Josh Allen and his performance against the Broncos as part of the reason behind McDermott’s firing.
“Josh Allen’s scapegoat wow”, wrote a fan.
“Bro got fired cause he forced Josh Allen to have all those turnovers”, stated a fan.
“McDermott out as the fall guy while Josh keeps turning it over”, said a fan.
“Josh Allen has gotten two NFL rule changes and a coach fired”, remarked a fan.
“bro really got fired for josh allen being a bum…. wow”, commented a fan.
“They need to fire Josh Allen”, remarked another fan.
“Starting to feel like these GMs are forgetting it’s a team sport”, wrote another fan.
“They were just a couple of seasons too late. But better late than never I guess”, commented another fan.
The reason behind fans calling out Allen for McDermott’s firing could be attributed to his four brutal turnovers against Denver, which potentially cost the Buffalo-based side a conference appearance.
Why Was Sean McDermott Fired?
Sean McDermott leaves the Bills after serving as their head coach for a total of nine years. While a lot of people have attributed his sacking to Buffalo’s latest failure in the divisional round, the bigger picture very well could be Bill’s lack of Super Bowl appearances.
Under McDermott’s tenure since 2017, the Buffalo Bills have yet to make a Super Bowl appearance. Despite having consistently qualified for the playoffs over the last nine seasons, they have been out twice after their conference championship games in 2020 and 2024.
Given Sean McDermott’s experience in the NFL, his firing has put his name as one of the hottest coaching prospects in the current carousel of NFL teams looking for a new head coach.
