Matt LaFleur’s Green Bay Packers blew a 21-3 lead and lost the Wild Card Round game against the Chicago Bears. LaFleur has been the Packers’ head coach since 2019 and has taken the team to the playoffs every year except 2022.
However, a crushing defeat against the franchise’s biggest rivals has the potential to change things. Many around the league believe that LaFleur will get fired by the Packers soon, and the fans are demanding that change as well.
In case he gets fired, which isn’t guaranteed as of now, LaFleur will not be without a job for long. Several teams have recently parted ways with their coaches after an unsuccessful season, who’d be pleased to give him that role.
In addition to that, there are three prominent connections within the league, as outlined by insider Jordan Schultz, that would be helpful for LaFleur.
Matt Ryan, the new president of the Atlanta Falcons, has played under LaFleur. Ryan was the Falcons quarterback from 2008 to 2021. LaFleur was his QB coach during his 2016 MVP-winning season.
Jon-Eric Sullivan, who was named the general manager of the Miami Dolphins two days ago, spent over two decades with the Green Bay Packers. He started as a training camp intern in 2003 and moved up to becoming the vice president of player personnel in 2022. Sullivan has worked with LaFleur for over half a decade.
Before joining the Packers as their head coach, LaFleur served as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. The Titans’ president, Chad Brinker, has worked with Green Bay previously.
There’s a lot of pressure on Green Bay and LaFleur after the loss against the Bears. However, there’s no confirmation on whether the Packers are planning on parting ways with the head coach.
Matt LaFleur on What Went Wrong Against the Bears
LaFleur was very disappointed with the loss. Blowing a huge lead, a shot at the title, against the biggest rivals is going to be a tough loss to move on from. At the post-game press conference, LaFleur talked about what went wrong.
He stated that the team needs to do a better job at executing the fundamentals. They weren’t going against something that they hadn’t prepared for.
“We’ve just got to do a better job of keeping our composure as a football team, and going out and doing the fundamental things that we practice all the time,” he said. “When you get into these types of big games, when you don’t execute simple fundamentals, it comes back to bite you, and that’s exactly what happened.”
As of now, LaFleur’s future with the Packers isn’t guaranteed. He could be let go or could be retained for another run. The next few days will decide everything for him.
