Matt LaFleur’s Green Bay Packers played the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card Round today. It might be difficult to wrap your head around what the Packers did in the second half of the game and how they managed to lose after such a strong start.
At halftime, the Packers were leading 21-3. It almost seemed like the Bears were going to get humiliated in front of their home crowd, and the Packers were about to move to the divisional round of the playoffs.
The second half started with the Bears cutting the lead to 21-6, which was still a massive lead for LaFleur’s team. The fourth quarter, however, was nothing short of a nightmare for the Packers fan. The Bears went on a 25-6 run and won the game 31-27.
LaFleur is now deservedly getting flamed for the loss.
“I like how Matt Lafleur harped on keeping the foot on the peddle during the halftime interview. And then has proceeded to take his foot off the peddle,” a fan wrote.
“Matt Lafleur is the softest and the weakest head coach this league has ever seen. U can miss me with the “but any team would hire him” or “bears fans want the pack to fire Lafleur” I don’t give a f*ck, I’m done with this soft a*s bullsh*t,” the fan continued in a follow up post.
“His teams always play scared when they get a lead and they are never buttoned up discipline wise. Mix the worst special teams in league over the last 5 yrs and there’s one common denominator,” a fan wrote.
“Franchise malpractice to keep a coach who continues to melt in big games when there is a Harbaugh in the market,” a fan wrote.
“And guess who’s getting a contract extension after the season?” a fan wrote.
“Will he be a head coach again?” a fan asked.
This loss is going to sting the Packers fanbase for a while. And LaFleur might not be around for long to share the sentiment.
Matt LaFleur’s Packers Stint Might End Now
This wasn’t just any other loss. It’s a playoff loss against the biggest rivals while blowing a massive 21-3 lead. It’s not only the fans who believe LaFleur’s time as the Packers’ head coach will come to an end; the NFL media thinks so, too.
As per Ian Rapoport, the Packers and LaFleur were going to discuss his tenure extension soon. It’s safe to assume that it’s not going to happen now. The Packers didn’t have a great regular season, so there’s no leverage at that end.
The fans are demanding a change at the head coaching position, and LaFleur has given them strong reasons to do so. It’ll be interesting to see what the Packers decide on LaFleur’s future with the organization.
