It is Super Bowl Sunday, and right now, the Seattle Seahawks are dominating the New England Patriots at Santa Clara, with that vaunted Seahawks “Dark Side” defense keeping Drake Maye and his squad at bay. As of writing, the Seahawks are up 19-0, and the majority of the points have come from kicker Jason Myers.
This means that Myers is in line to win the Super Bowl MVP, which begs the question of whether a kicker ever won that award. Of the 59 Super Bowl MVPs that have come before, there have been 34 quarterbacks, eight wide receivers, seven running backs, four linebackers, two defensive ends, two safeties, one kick returner, one defensive tackle, and one cornerback. So far, no kicker has ever won the award.
While kickers may score the most points in a game, their chances of winning the MVP trophy are usually slim, though New England punter Ryan Allen did come close during Super Bowl 53. He had five punts that game but ultimately lost to teammate Julian Edelman. Packers kick returner Desmond Howard is the only special teams player to become the Super Bowl MVP.
To make things even more difficult for Myers, Sam Darnold also completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end AJ Barner during the fourth quarter. However, so far, it is not the offense that is winning it for the Seahawks, as the award might go to a defensive player.
Seattle Seahawks Defense Stifling New England Offense So Far
It is already the fourth quarter, and so far, aside from a Mack Hollins touchdown, the Seattle Seahawks have prevented the New England Patriots from scoring. The Patriots were held scoreless in the first three quarters, and the Seahawks managed to limit them to just 52 yards of offense in their first five drives.
Their biggest target had been Drake Maye, whom the Seattle defense pressured throughout the game. Maye got sacked thrice in the first half alone. Cornerback Devon Witherspoon had one of the biggest sacks on him, and this may hand him the MVP, as his presence has made Maye think twice, and the Seahawks defense forced him to throw away plays.
