San Francisco 49ers defensive end Keion White was hospitalized on Monday morning following a shooting incident that occurred just hours after the conclusion of the Super Bowl. The 27-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to his ankle in San Francisco.
Although a TMZ report indicates that the injury is non-life-threatening, White is required to undergo surgery and is currently under medical care at a local hospital.
As per preliminary investigation by the San Francisco Police Department, the violence stemmed from a verbal altercation between two groups inside a business. Reports suggest that White was not involved in the dispute but was just an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire when an unknown suspect started shooting. The 49ers organization confirmed the news in a statement to The Athletic, emphasizing that they will provide updates on his condition “when appropriate.”
This event marks yet another unsettling instance of NFL players being affected by gun violence. In August 2024, White’s teammate, Ricky Pearsall, was also wounded during an attempted armed robbery in San Francisco. On the other hand, Kris Boyd was also shot in New York City in November 2025. As of now, White has not issued any personal statement regarding this incident.
NFL Players Being Affected By Gun Violence is a Growing Concern
On August 31, 2024, 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted armed robbery in San Francisco’s Union Square. The incident occurred in broad daylight when a 17-year-old suspect attempted to steal Pearsall’s Rolex watch, leading to a physical altercation. The bullet passed through Pearsall’s chest without damaging any vital organs. Just days after the shooting, he was released from the hospital and returned to the field later that season for his NFL debut in October 2024.
On November 16, 2025, Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was critically wounded in a shooting outside a restaurant in Manhattan. The altercation reportedly began after a verbal dispute over outfits between Boyd’s group and another party outside the Sei Less venue.
However, the incident took a nasty turn when the argument escalated, leading to Boyd being shot in the abdomen and the bullet lodging in his lung. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. Despite the severity of the injury, Boyd stabilized pretty soon, sharing updates on his recovery.
