Following the Denver Broncos’ AFC Championship loss to the New England Patriots, quarterback Bo Nix and head coach Sean Payton got into some controversy regarding Nix’s ankle injury in the AFC Divisional win against the Buffalo Bills.
Nix suffered a broken ankle in the third-to-last play of the game, taking a knee, and awkwardly facing pain in his ankle. He did not play the following week against the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.
Speaking to the media on January 26, head coach Sean Payton told reporters that Nix had a condition that was predisposed, saying it was a matter of when, not if that Nix would suffer an injury. Nix clapped back by telling reporters there was nothing previously wrong with his ankle.
This situation has caused some to believe there’s a rift between the two and going as far as thinking Nix could potentially be traded. That’s what The Ringer’s Dan Kelly predicted recently on “The Bill Simmons Podcast.”
“The Broncos trade Bo Nix because of all this Sean Payton-Nix drama that’s happened,” Kelly said on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” on Thursday. “Even though it’s probably not really much drama.”
Nix is eligible for a hefty contract extension following the 2026 season. Perhaps Peyton’s comments could be a negotiating tactic for when Nix is due for an extension at a discounted price.
Broncos Are Confident Bo Nix Will Be Ready For Training Camp
Following Bo Nix‘s broken ankle injury, he quickly had successful surgery on January 25. After undergoing successful surgery, Sean Payton provided a positive update, stating that Nix should be ready for the start of training camp.
Training camp usually begins mid-end July, which gives Nix more than enough time to recover from his 4-6 week long expected recovery time.
Nix led the Broncos to a 14-3 record last season while becoming the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
