Russell Wilson Makes Feelings Very Clear On Sean Payton Beef After Viral Tweet: “I’ve Beaten Sean”

Russell Wilson and Sean Payton reignited their feud in the 2025 season. After the New York Giants registered a 33-32 comeback win against Payton’s Denver Broncos, the head coach took a subtle jab at the former Super Bowl champion.

In the game, the Giants were led by rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, and Wilson was warming the bench. Payton praised Dart’s “spark” behind the Giants’ victory, but many found it to be a personal dig at Wilson.

Wilson hit back, calling the Broncos’ head coach “classless” in a viral tweet. He even referenced the infamous Saints bounty scandal from when Payton was suspended in 2012 as coach, by saying the Broncos head coach was still “bounty hunting 15+ years later.”

On Monday, Wilson appeared on Bussin’ with the Boys and delved into his reason behind posting such a tweet. Wilson said Payton didn’t need to take a shot at him because he was not on his team anymore.

“I don’t say much, I hardly ever say anything,” Wilson said. “I think there’s a time and place, but sometimes you get fatigued of people talking about you. You just say, like you mentioned, we’re all human, you know? But it’s one thing for people that maybe aren’t in the field. or people, say bots or whatever, talking. I don’t worry about stuff like that, never.

“But to me, when you’ve been in the ring or you’ve been on the same side of this and that, and I’ve got the same amount of rings as you’ve got. meaning Sean, listen, I’ve got a lot of respect for him as a play-caller and this and that, but to take a shot? I don’t like it. I don’t think it’s necessary, especially when I’m not even on your team anymore.”

Wilson said it was a matter of disrespect and he wasn’t going to keep quiet.

“So for me, I’ve realized I’ve stayed quiet for so long,” Wilson added. “There’s a time and place where I’m not. For me, I know who I am as a competitor, as a warrior, as a champion too. I’ve beaten Sean too, you know. We’ve been in the same place and the same thing. And so it’s not a matter of disrespect. Just don’t disrespect me.”

How the Russell Wilson-Sean Payton Relationship Started (Broncos Era)

The relationship first became sour after their relationship started with the Broncos. Sean Payton was hired by the Broncos as head coach in 2023 and he inherited Russell Wilson, who was traded there by the Seattle Seahawks following a disappointing season.

When they first started, many thought they would be able to make something work in Denver. However, a series of disappointing results followed, with Denver struggling under Wilson, who went 11-19 in his starts over two seasons. Wilson was even benched down the stretch of the 2023 season.

Moreover, Payton refused to integrate Wilson’s personal coaches inside the Broncos facility, which only damaged their relationship.
