Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr might have already retired, but it seems that he still keeps getting some calls to unretire. The former Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints QB made a lot during his time as an active player in the NFL and could have played this season, but he opted to retire, turning down a $30 million payout from the Saints.
Through the years, Carr has signed to some very lucrative contracts, from his rookie and rookie extension contracts with the Oakland Raiders and then moving to Las Vegas, to finally playing for his second team in New Orleans before finally retiring in 2025. As per Spotrac, Carr has earned a total of $210,001,996 in his active NFL career.
Derek Carr Contracts Explored
Rookie Contract (2014-2017) With the Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders picked Derek Carr during the 2014 NFL draft as the 36th overall pick in the second round out of Fresno State. This soon led him to a four-year rookie contract worth $5,371,801 with a $2,226,764 signing bonus. He earned an average of $1,342,950 per year during this time.
Rookie Extension (2017-2022) With the Oakland/ Las Vegas Raiders
He proved to be an asset to the now-Las Vegas Raiders that they made him a starter and had him sign a five-year extension worth $125 million, which was tens of times larger than what he was making as a rookie. He also had a $12.5 million signing bonus, which showed how much the team had valued him at that point in his career.
On April 12, 2022, Derek Carr also signed another extension, this time for $121.5 million, and that was worth three years. However, Carr was beginning to show his age and did not do well during the 2022 season, being benched as Jarrett Stidham took over as the starting QB. The Raiders tried to trade him and asked him to waive a no-trade clause in his contract, but he refused, leading the team to release him in 2023.
Free Agent Contract (2023-2024) With the New Orleans Saints
A few months after his 2023 release, the New Orleans Saints picked him up for a $150,000,000 contract, which should have lasted until 2026. He averaged $37,500,000 per year and had a $28,500,000 signing bonus, but he would only complete two years of that contract, opting to retire after the 2024 season instead.
