The Cleveland Browns quarterback battle is getting more interesting by the day, as head coach Todd Monken expresses confidence in both quarterbacks, including Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson.
While Watson was widely expected to win the starting quarterback battle at the beginning of the offseason, Sanders has reportedly shown significant improvement in his game from last year.
Monken also shared that he believes the Browns have two starting-level quarterbacks on their roster and added that he keeps leaning back and forth between Sanders and Watson day after day.
Talking about what the Browns might have in mind while choosing their starting quarterback, ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler shared his thoughts:
“I expect the Browns to take this not only through training camp, but maybe early in preseason games. get each player a start. Like you see with a lot of these QB battles, they feel like they’re far from finisher. They have a lot more to see. But they’ve noticed two positives.
One, Deshun Watson, they feel like he’s moving around well. The mobility is getting there, coming along nicely after that Achilles issue. And then Shador Sanders, he might have actually impressed more so than they even thought. I was told from somebody there that he’s got a presence about him. Like teammates respond to him in the huddle, the way he carries himself. That is a factor in this race. So he is not going away. Much more to come on that one for sure.”
Shedeur Sanders Draws Comparisons Between Todd Monken and Deion Sanders’ Coaching Style
During a recent press conference, Shedeur Sanders was asked about his thoughts on Todd Monken’s style of coaching, especially the way he repeatedly stops practice in order to iron out the details.
Sanders shared that he is used to this kind of coaching, subtly drawing comparisons between Monken and his dad, Deion Sanders.
“Seems like a guy that I’m real familiar with, so I enjoy it. I definitely like his expectations,” Sanders said. “He gives you no choice but to be great or get out the way. It’s that simple.”
Sanders also shared that his relationship with Monken has also benefitted him in his game.
