DeMeco Ryans has had a deep connection with Houston. That’s where he started his NFL career. The Texans drafted him in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played for the Texans from 2006 to 2011.
Ryans then moved to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he retired in 2015. During his stint with the Texans, Ryans won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award and earned two Pro Bowl honors in 2007 and 2009.
Nearly six years after getting his start in NFL coaching, Ryans came back to Houston. In 2023, he was appointed as the head coach of the Texans. Ryans has had a successful run as the Texans’ head coach so far.
In addition to football, Ryans personal life also took a fresh turn in Houston. As per People, he met his wife, Jamila Ryans, in the city, in the parking lot of their church. After several years of dating, they got married and have four kids together.
Jamila is a registered nurse and the nonprofit director of the DeMeco Ryans Foundation. She has always been supportive of her husband’s coaching duties and believes there’s a bigger reason why he’s a football coach.
“I think my husband’s biggest reason for coaching is to bless others,” she said at a community event in 2025. “Football is a platform for him. In that platform, he is going to bless others. He’s going to spread the gospel. He is going to raise men, build men. And it’s not about the X’s and O’s. The X’s and O’s are the vehicle through which he’s able to do these things.”
Jamila has spoken about how Ryans’ football coaching methods can also be traced in the way he teaches their kids. Sometimes she has to remind the “loving” father that it’s not the same as football.
DeMeco Ryans’ Coaching is About Uplifting Others
Ryans started as a Defensive quality control coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. Then he became the linebackers coach and the defensive coordinator with the same team. After that, he came back home.
The Texans’ head coaching stint became his first head coaching experience, and Ryans has done very well so far. He has a 32-19 regular season record and a 3-3 postseason record. The Texans have made three playoff appearances under Ryans.
Jamila believes that Ryans leadership is about uplifting others, and he leads his team by example.
“He’s had to continue to uplift and encourage the building and the players,” Jamila said. “Just watching him do that has been the most amazing thing for my family because he’s been an excellent example for our four kids.”
Jamila stated that over the years, she has watched him grow as a leader. As per a recent report by SI, Ryans is expected to be the Texans’ head coach for a very long time.
