NFL legend and former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton believes that the recent Super Bowl berth of a franchise is due to more than just one player. On Sunday, Jan. 25, coach Mike Vrabel’s New England Patriots booked their ticket to Super Bowl LX after they defeated coach Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos in the 2026 AFC Championship game.
In a video posted by @4thand1show on X/Twitter, which is Newton’s show, he opined that Patriots star quarterback Drake Maye was not the sole reason they reached the NFL final. Newton said Maye was instrumental in his team’s success but also backed up the other members of the New England-based roster.
“ It’s giving Trent Dilfer, it’s giving Jim Mcmahon, Brad Johnson, Rex Grossman. All of those names combined benefited off a great defense alone. They’re not here because of Drake May. That’s just facts. Does that make Drake Maye a bad player? No. Did Drake may do enough to win a football game? Yes, but I would also say Drake Maye did enough to lose a game that he won too,” Newton claimed.
Newton retired from professional football in 2021, as he played with the Carolina Panthers in his last NFL stint. Now, he is a football analyst and sports show host. Maye and the rest of the Patriots are gearing up for their Super Bowl LX matchup against coach Mike Macdonald’s Seattle Seahawks on Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Cam Newton Reaffirms That He Believes Drake Maye Will Go Down As An All-Time Great
On the latest episode of his “4th&1” show, Cam Newton said he believes Drake Maye will eventually become a legend and an all-time great.
For Newton, it’s all about consistency and career length for a player like Maye. The former player said if Maye maintains his current level, he can rack up more career accolades. Maye is currently in the second year of his NFL tenure.
“But this is what you have to understand about ol’ Drake Maye. If he keep this up with this trajectory, winning this early in his career, whether I like it, whether I love it, whether I hate it, hate it some more, hate it even more than that, despise it or just don’t wanna give credit when credit’s due, Drake may will go down as an all-time great even super-seeding the individual that played there that got a statue right outside Gillette Field,” Newton said.
