Cam Newton is one of the most revered former athletes. His 2015 MVP season is regarded among the best individual seasons by a quarterback in recent memory. Newton is undeniably one of the best players of all time.
However, the outspoken individual often gets targeted by fans for a mistake he made nearly a decade ago. It was Super Bowl 50, and the Carolina Panthers were playing the Denver Broncos for the title.
In the fourth quarter, the quarterback fumbled the fall and then hesitated to jump on the loose ball he had fumbled. This allowed the Broncos to recover the ball, and CJ Anderson found the end zone to win the Super Bowl.
Since then, Newton has been criticized regularly by fans. During a recent conversation with Jalen Hurts, Newton stated that fans still haven’t forgiven him for it, and they constantly remind him that he cost them a Super Bowl.
During an appearance on ESPN’s First Take, Newton said, “I didn’t jump on the football in the Super Bowl. I can’t post a Instagram post, a TikTok or even a Twitter post without somebody mentioning that.”
When a compilation clip of Newton’s admission was posted on X by Dov Kleiman, fans did what Newton said they’ve been doing for years.
“It’s VERY well deserved. For every arrogant Superman celebration, he couldn’t come through when his team needed him most. In fact, he ditched them, and now will forever be remembered for it,” a fan wrote.
“Drake Maye wouldn’t have fumbled,” a fan wrote.
“’ The legendary Cam Newton’ Bruh…no…no…okay,” a fan wrote.
“If it was one of his hats – he would jump right on it- idiot,” a fan wrote.
“Go away Cam Newton,” a fan wrote.
Newton stated that back then, he was the golden child. He was on a dominant run, and it seemed like he’d walk away with a Super Bowl win. But when it didn’t go that way, he cried.
Cam Newton Didn’t Dive for the Ball to Avoid Injury
A lot has been said about Newton and his hesitation to jump on the loose ball. We’ll never know what would’ve been the outcome if he recovered the ball. However, Newton has been on record, stating clearly why he didn’t jump.
During a media interaction in February 2016, he said that his legs were in a weird position and if he had jumped on the ball, he’d have injured himself.
“I don’t dive for one fumble, because the way my leg was, it could have been contorted in a way. You say my effort. I didn’t dive down. I fumbled, that’s fine,” he said.
Although he acknowledged his mistake, he stated that the Panthers didn’t lose because of that one mistake.
