Cam Newton Drop Blunt Opinion on Ty Simpson’s NFL Draft Decision Despite $6.5M Offer To Stay in College

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson shocked fans after he announced his decision to declare for the 2026 NFL Draft after just starting for the Crimson Tide for one year.

Simpson joined Nick Saban’s Alabama in 2022 as an early signee and spent his time developing during his time as a backup before he got the chance to start under Kalen DeBoer in the 2025 college football season.

The Alabama QB was reportedly offered massive dollars to come back to college for another year, especially from schools like Miami and Tennessee, offering him $4M to $6.5M to enter the transfer portal, according to sources close to Simpson.

Talking about his decision to leave the money and enter the draft this year, former Heisman trophy winner, Cam Newton said:

“For me, the the top quarterbacks in this in this draft, and I don’t, you know, at this particular point in time, Dante has not declared yet, but it’s Fernando Mendoza, Dante Moore, and Ty Simpson. With those type of grades, you got to leave in a game that’s so heavily reliant on a quality quarterback.”

    He continued:

“The top teams that have draft picks, you got the Raiders at one, they’re taking a quarterback. The Jets, they’re taking a quarterback.
Cardinals, they’re taking a quarterback. The Titans, they’re not taking a quarterback.

“The Giants, they’re not taking a quarterback either. Then you have Cleveland who could potentially still take a top tier quarterback depending on what the focus is for them. It’s, it leaves the question of him betting on himself to be what he could potentially be a top 10 pick.”

Joel Klatt Disagrees With Ty Simpson’s NFL Draft Decision

During his latest analysis on Ty Simpson’s NFL Draft decision, Joel Klatt said he doesn’t agree with the Alabama QB’s decision.

Klatt clarified that while he believes Simpson is a great player, experience is what pays in the NFL and shared that he is not speaking in terms of money.

The college football analyst then named the young quarterbacks that are currently having a good NFL run like Bo Nix, Jayden Daniel and Caleb Williams, and highlighted that all three of them have many college starts in common.

“If you look at the quarterbacks that have won Super Bowls basically this century in the last 25 years since Brady won his first, if you average out their college career, what you get is a college career that is well over 30 starts, well over 1,200 passing attempts, well over 750 completions, 50 touchdown passes.” Klatt said.

Simpson led Alabama to an overall record of 11-4 and threw for 3,567 yards, scored 28 touchdowns, and had five interceptions in 2025.
