It’s been over 10 days since the Cleveland Browns fired head coach Kevin Stefanski. It was nearly guaranteed, considering the terrible run the Browns were on, and the official decision was announced on January 5.
Since then, Stefanski has been waiting to land another head coaching job while the Browns are actively looking for their next coach. They’ve had several interviews with potential coaches, but nothing has been finalized yet.
There are several great candidates available for the teams looking for a head coach. From former head coaches to current position coaches, the Browns have a lot of options.
Top 5 Potential Candidates for the Browns After Kevin Stefanski
Mike McCarthy
The Dallas Cowboys fired Mike McCarthy on January 13, 2025. It’s been over a year, and he hasn’t joined any team yet. McCarthy has a proven track record and all the qualities that the Browns need right now.
He was the head coach for the Green Bay Packers for over a decade. He has won the Super Bowl and boasts a 174-112-2 regular season and 11-11 playoff record. After Stefanski, McCarthy would be the best bet for Cleveland.
Vance Joseph
The Denver Broncos were the strongest team in the AFC this season and secured the best record, 14-3, across the league in the regular season. Broncos’ defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has been at the helm of that success.
With prior head coaching experience and his ties to the success of the Broncos, Joseph is a solid candidate for the Browns. It’s worth noting that Joseph isn’t open to talking about offers right now.
“It’s been on the back burner,” Joseph said, via the Denver Post. “For me, winning is a priority. What happens after that happens. I can’t control that.”
While his focus is on the postseason run, he isn’t against the idea of becoming a head coach again. If the Browns play their cards right, they might be able to land him.
Brian Flores
In his first stint as a head coach with the Miami Dolphins, Brian Flores went 24-25. He then pivoted toward position coaching. After his last stint as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, Flores is awaiting his next opportunity.
Tommy Rees
The Browns might not have to look outside to replace Kevin Stefanski. They have several talented coaches within the organization who are capable of running the program and are waiting for an opportunity.
Tommy Rees is one such coach. The offensive coordinator for the Browns has already interviewed for the job and is waiting to see if the organization clears him for the role.
Jim Schwartz
Jim Schwartz is another capable coach within the Browns organization. The defensive coordinator has decades of coaching experience and has served as a head coach for the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2013.
Schwartz has also interviewed for the job, and as per recent reports, he has been scheduled for a second interview.
