The San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks are set to face off against each other in the NFL Divisional Round matchup on Saturday. Throughout the season, the Seahawks have been the better team.
With 14 wins and just three losses, the Seahawks clinched the conference, while the 49ers stood third in the NFC West with 12 wins. They’ve already met twice this season, winning one game each. Now, they’ll meet on a much bigger stage.
The rivalry between the two teams has been one of the highlights of the league over the last two decades. Although there are plenty of rivalries in the NFL that date back several decades, the one shared by the 49ers and the Seahawks is considerably newer.
Before the two teams step on the field again on Saturday, let’s take a look at their head-to-head record in the playoffs, regular season, and more.
49ers vs Seahawks History
The two teams first met in 1976, but there was no official rivalry between them back then. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that the Seahawks joined the 49ers in the NFC West. Since then, they’ve played at least two games against each other every season.
Overall, the Seahawks have an advantage over the 49ers. They have played 56 games, with the Seahawks winning 32 of them. The 49ers have won 24. This head-to-head record includes their playoff matchups as well.
On Saturday, when the two teams step on the field, it’ll be their third overall postseason game. In the previous two outings, they’ve won one game each. So, the playoff record is even as compared to the Seahawks having a regular season advantage of 31-23.
Their first postseason matchup was back in 2013 for the NFC Championship. The Seahawks won that game 23-17. After nearly a decade-long wait, the two teams met in the playoffs once again in 2022 in the Wild Card Round.
The 49ers got the better of Seattle, winning the game comfortably 41-23. The largest victory margin for each team shows their dominance in different eras. In 1988, the Seahawks suffered their biggest loss against their rivals with a 38-7 final score.
Over a decade later, they got their revenge with an even bigger margin. In 2005, the Seahawks defeated the 49ers 41-3.
The game on Saturday will add another chapter to what is becoming one of the best rivalries in the league. In addition to the overall record advantage, the Seahawks will go into the game with a healthier roster.
The 49ers have shown that they can still win games even without some of their star players, but with the weight of a rivalry on their shoulders, it’ll be interesting to see how they manage to upset the best NFC team of the season.
