The Pittsburgh Steelers are now without a coach after Mike Tomlin, who has never had a losing season with the team, resigned after being eliminated in the Wild Card round. Many believed he would not be fired, especially with his success as a head coach and Super Bowl winner, and his own players rallying to defend him. However, these same players were shocked when he announced his resignation.
During the post-game after their playoff loss to the Houston Texans, quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke at length about his support for Mike Tomlin, even getting annoyed at one reporter for asking another question regarding the coach. When the coach announced his resignation, Rodgers reportedly apologized to the coach and was sobbing.
Meanwhile, outside linebacker TJ Watt was visibly shaken by the announcement, as he reportedly did not want Mike Tomlin to go. The star was reportedly saying “No” over and over again, according to reports, with his eyes reportedly on the verge of tears. He and Tomlin have reportedly forged a tight bond since he was drafted by the team in 2017.
Tomlin was well-liked by players as a head coach. He guided the team to a Super Bowl win and was the one who drafted many of them into the Steelers. He finishes the season with a 10-7 record but will leave a lasting legacy with the team, being one of the most successful Steelers coaches in history.
Pittsburgh Steelers Already Looking For Mike Tomlin’s Replacement
Meanwhile, as the Steelers players mourn the loss of a beloved coach, the Steelers organization itself is now scrambling to find the person to replace Mike Tomlin. Whoever that is will have some pretty big shoes to fill, especially as Tomlin has won a Super Bowl and is constantly giving the team winning seasons.
The team reportedly requested to interview Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase on Wednesday, as well as Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores. There are also a lot of other head coaches in the market, such as former Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski and former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, though the team has not shown interest in them yet.
