Caleb Williams’ Chicago Bears lost to the Los Angeles Rams 17-20 in the Divisional Round matchup. The upset was more shocking because they had the home-field advantage and had proved its importance in the game against the Packers.
After trailing 21-3 at halftime, the Bears pulled off a stunning 31-27 win over the Packers. Williams led the team’s offense once again, going 24 for 48 for 361 yards and two touchdowns.
The expectation was that he’d do something similar against the Rams today to get his team to the Conference Championship. He tried his best. Williams went 23 of 42 for 257 yards with two touchdowns. He also recorded three interceptions, and the Rams used every opportunity to secure a bigger lead.
After the game, Bears head coach Ben Johnson heaped praise on his quarterback for an incredible season and his clutch plays. Johnson stated that Williams possesses skills and instincts that are impossible to coach.
“There’s some things that you just can’t coach, and he’s got that about him. He’s got a knack, he’s clutch. He does so many good things,” Johnson said.
The coach admitted that he made plenty of bad calls throughout the season, and Williams helped him correct them. Johnson said that the team is disappointed because they didn’t win and made some costly mistakes.
He believes that Williams is the type of player who will hold this feeling of loss with him until he takes all the lessons out of it. And after that, he’ll come back the next season and ensure that he doesn’t make those mistakes again.
Caleb Williams on the Critical Turnover
It’s interesting that Johnson spoke on turnovers during the Rams game while praising Williams because the quarterback made one of the most costly turnovers in the game, which turned things in the Rams’ favor.
After the game, he stated that the turnover was a result of miscommunication with DJ Moore. His throw was intercepted by Rams’ safety Kam Curl.
“I got to go back and watch it… but in the moment, I saw the front-side safety down, front-sided concept,” Williams said. “End up getting hemmed up a little bit and so moved on and had D.J. [Moore] going over top over all of it. Just a miscommunication between him and I.”
This was Williams’ worst performance of the season in terms of interceptions. He recorded three interceptions in this game.
