Matthew Stafford’s Record in Cold Weather: Looking at How the Rams QB Has Performed in Freezing Games Ahead of NFL Divisional Round

Matthew Stafford’s Los Angeles Rams will play the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Soldier Field. Stafford is the primary offensive weapon for the Rams, and his performance could be the make-or-break factor for his team.

There’s no doubt that Stafford will give his absolute best yet again for the Rams. The problem, however, is that the quarterback has had a terrible record whenever he has played in extreme weather conditions.

Unfortunately, the weather on Sunday is expected to be unfavorable for Stafford. As per meteorologist Noah Bergren, the temperature at Soldier Field will drop to the 10-15 degree range with wind possibly going at 20-30 MPH.

“Could be one of the coldest NFL and Chicago Bears games on record this Sunday when the Rams come to the Windy City. AI Euro model spitting out wind chills 0 to -10°F mid-afternoon Sunday with air temps for a high maybe in the 10-15°F range,” Bergren reported.

So, what is Stafford’s record in these weather conditions? Stafford has played six games where the temperature dropped to 32 or below. He is 3-3 in those six games. His score sheet in those games is slightly better.

Stafford has thrown 15 touchdown passes for 1519 yards and three interceptions. If we consider all cold, rainy, or snowy conditions since he has joined the Rams, Stafford has won just one out of 10 games in those conditions.

There’s no denying Stafford’s ability to perform in big games. But the weather has managed to hold him back. The Bears, on the other hand, are far more equipped to play in those conditions. In fact, they thrive in extreme weather, while some other teams struggle.

What’s the Reason Behind Matthew Stafford’s Struggles?

As per Swift of the Swift Sports Network, Stafford got used to playing indoors when he was with the Detroit Lions. After he went to the Los Angeles Rams, he played all of his home games inside a dome.

Although teams and players are usually aware of the different weather conditions in different parts of the country, Stafford’s track record shows that he lacks the ability to put up a game-winning performance in those conditions.

“All but one of his games have been played in warm weather or indoors. The one outdoor game that was even mildly cold was against Carolina earlier in the season. It was 45 degrees, and played outside on the road. Stafford threw two interceptions in that game [Week 13], and the Panthers won 31 to 28. Sunday in Chicago, it’s going to be far colder than that,” Swift said.

Needless to say, the Rams’ coaching staff would be aware of this problem, and they’d have devised a plan to help Stafford on Sunday. It’ll be interesting to see how the quarterback performs in the Divisional Round.
