Ty Simpson’s Rams draft move was a polarising one for many fans and analysts as some believe the franchise should’ve selected someone who would help the team get close to a Super Bowl title this year.
With Matthew Stafford going into the 2026 NFL season as a reigning MVP, some analysts questioned their decision of drafting a quarterback for the future and not taking care of their current team with a position like wide receiver.
During a conversation on ESPN’s “Get Up”, analyst Louis Riddick claimed that the Rams had some liabilities in their secondary and cornerback parts of the team, which it did help by extending Trent McDuffie’s extension.
While talking about taking care of the future, Riddick said:
“The best time to get your franchise quarterback, is when you don’t need him. And see, Matthew Stafford, remember last year, it wasn’t that long ago that we were sitting here talking about the fact that we didn’t even know if 2025 was going to be a year he was going to play. All summer. Exactly. Right up to camp.
“Sean McVay just talked about the fact that they know that Matthew is year to year. They know that. The last thing they want to wind up having happen is Matthew going, you know what, I’m done. And then they have to go looking for a quarterback.”
He continued:
“Now you’re the Steelers. Now you’re waiting for Aaron Rodgers. He’s not going to be – he may be the heir apparent, but he’s not playing this year. The hope is that he doesn’t play this year. So I think – I get it.”
Dan Orlovsky Defends Rams’ Decision to Pick Ty Simpson
Dan Orlovsky has been among the biggest Ty Simpson supporters all throughout the offseason and even claimed the former Alabama star to be the QB1 in this draft class.
Talking about the Rams’ decision to select Simpson, Orlovsky said he believes it was the right decision for a “well run organization.”
Orlovsky then addressed everyone’s concern about the Rams not selecting a wide receiver and said that it wouldn’t have helped them win a Super Bowl, hence passing up on a quarterback at that position wouldn’t have been a smart move.
“To get 52 and four is not going to be the difference of making the Super Bowl,” Orlovsky said.
Ty Simpson started as Alabama’s QB1 for one season, meaning he has just 15 starts under his belt so far.
