After a tumultuous season that ended with a playoff loss to the Houston Texans and veteran head coach Mike Tomlin stepping away from the team, the Pittsburgh Steelers now face a major dilemma at quarterback.
Aaron Rodgers signed a one-year deal, arriving in the NFC North at the start of the 2025 season. As of this writing, that deal has run out, and the former Super Bowl-winning QB is yet to make a decision on his future in the NFL.
After numerous rumors and uncertainty on Rodgers’ future, the Pittsburgh Steelers have now placed the rarely seen ‘Right To First Refusal‘ tag on Rodgers. This tag essentially means the Steelers can now match any offer made by another NFL franchise if they wish to keep the 42-year-old in town.
The tender also makes sure that Rodgers can receive a 10% increase in salary from last season, meaning he can earn upto $15,000,000 this year without incentives. This move also prohibits Rodgers from resigning with the Steelers before the start of training camp.
Steelers Back Aaron Rodgers In A Corner Amid Uncertainty on Future
While Aaron Rodgers has been hesitant to comment on his future in the NFL, this move by the Steelers ensures that if the veteran QB decides to leave for another franchise, they would receive draft capital, as signing Rodgers as a free agent has now been made impossible.
While the Steelers’ gamble can backfire, Rodgers has now been left with just two options to consider going forward. Unless a team is willing to spend future draft picks, Rodgers can either resign with the Steelers after the start of training camp or call it quits on his NFL career.
As for the Pittsburgh QB dilemma, unless Rodgers returns to take over the starting spot, newly appointed head coach Mike McCarthy will have third-round pick Drew Allar at his disposal. Projected starter Mason Rudolph and 2025 pick Will Howard will complete the QB room.
