Without a doubt, Fernando Mendoza was the best quarterback option in this year’s NFL Draft, and this is shown when he was drafted No. 1 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders. The second-best quarterback in the draft was Ty Simpson, who was the No. 13 pick by the Los Angeles Rams. Despite both of them being picked during the same round, it is pretty clear that their upcoming contracts will be far different from one another.
Despite being Round 1 picks, both quarterbacks still need to earn their spot in the final roster and play for their respective teams. This means that both of them are yet to sign their respective contracts, but it is already clear who among them will be expecting the bigger starting salary.
A Comparison of Fernando Mendoza’s Contract and Ty Simpson’s Contract
The national championship-winning Heisman winner and No. 1 draft pick Fernando Mendoza is expected to sign a record-setting four-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders later this year. That contract is reportedly worth $54.6 million, and he is set to earn $10,413,000 on his rookie season alone, according to Sportrac.
In comparison, former Alabama QB Ty Simpson is set to earn a $24.3 million contract, which will also last for four years. He is set to earn $4.62 million in his rookie season. This disparity between the two is due to the NFL’s rookie scale, which sees the rookie contracts going down in worth the lower they went in the draft.
It should be noted that those contracts still do not include their respective signing bonuses though, and Mendoza is set to earn more than twice that of Simpson in that department. The No. 1 pick is set to earn a $38.11 million signing bonus, while Simpson is set to earn a $14.9 million signing bonus.
What Is Next For Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson?
Of course, their next step is to actually sign their rookie contracts. After that, they would have to go to their respective training camps and earn their spots in their respective teams. However, given that both of them are very high draft picks, they are expected to not get cut from their respective final rosters.
As for them individually, Fernando Mendoza is expected to become the Raiders’ new starting quarterback while Ty Simpson may have to battle for the right to be QB2. The QB1 role will of course, go to Matthew Stafford over at Los Angeles.
