Mark Cuban sold his majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks franchise of the NBA in 2023, but admitted to regretting the decision multiple times. He sold the majority stake, while keeping 27% in the business, to the Adelson and Dumont families. In his latest statement, Cuban revealed the reason why he couldn’t buy back the Mavs from their current owners.
Cuban’s 23 years of association with the Dallas Mavericks came to an end in 2023, as he sold his stake for a staggering $3.5 billion. The sale was made to Miriam Adelson, the widow of the late casino tycoon, Sheldon Adelson, and his son-in-law, Patrick Dumont. In a recent statement, the Shark Tank investor stated, via Front Office Sports:
“If there was any chance of being able to do that anymore I would, but that’s just not the game anymore… I told [the investors] I didn’t think the Adelsons had any interest in selling. And they don’t.”
Cuban sold almost 73% of the Mavericks’ stakes for $3.5 billion. Currently, the team is valued at $5.1 billion, as per Forbes. To buy it back, he surely will have to pay more. However, for now, the Adelson and Dumont families aren’t interested in selling.
“They weren’t happy,” Mark Cuban alleges dissatisfaction inside Dallas Mavericks
Business personality Mark Cuban, in his statement via the aforementioned source, detailed how he reached a stage of wanting to buy the franchise back. He said that certain people, currently associated with the franchise, weren’t happy with how things were done. However, that didn’t come to fruition, probably because of the owners’ disinterest in selling.
Cuban said:
“What happened was a bunch of people had contacted me; they weren’t happy with the way things were. And I was like, ‘Look, if you can get them to sell, I would be more than happy to contribute my equity, et cetera, et cetera, and help.’ But I didn’t expect that to materialize. I told them I didn’t think it would happen, that I didn’t think the Adelsons had any interest in selling. And they don’t.”
The former majority owner also stated that he didn’t regret selling, but he regretted selling to the wrong party. The front office is currently looking to build around the franchise face and the 2026 Rookie of the Year, Cooper Flagg, for the upcoming season. They will aim to acquire some important pieces during the offseason.
In the 2025 midseason trade period, the front office offloaded big contracts and hoarded assets that can come in handy during the offseason. Moreover, Kyrie Irving’s addition will surely solve a lot of problems for the squad. Only time will tell how well the Mavs fare in the trade market after the 2025-26 season ends, as their next season’s run will depend on how the offseason goes.
