The Michigan Wolverines have an almost entirely new staff going into the next season. The program had a turbulent run last season with its on-field performances and off-field controversy surrounding former head coach Sherrone Moore.
The Wolverines hired Kyle Whittingham, who had a two-decade-long run with the Utah Utes, to lead the program from next season. Even though Whittingham hasn’t coached a game yet for Michigan, the changes he’s made are remarkable.
Michigan’s national recruiting rankings have skyrocketed, and now they rank among the top 10 teams in the country. The program has landed multiple high-profile commitments, and they’re receiving the necessary backing from the management to make this happen.
The Wolverines’ 2027 class has been tearing up the recruiting trail with a wave of recent commitments. They have added Colt Lumpris, a four-star, 6’7″, 240 lbs, tight end who flipped his commitment from Alabama to Michigan.
They’ve also added Tavares Harrington, a four-star cornerback/safety, and Lundon Hampton, a four-star running back with elite speed and playmaking abilities.
Michigan’s recruitment run is far from over. They are eyeing Seth Tillman, a four-star defensive lineman, who is ranked as a top 150 player nationally. Tillman has narrowed down his list to Clemson, Kentucky, Michigan, South Carolina, and Georgia.
The Wolverines are also targeting Myles Smith, a four-star edge rusher, who is a homegrown talent and can provide great strength to their defensive front.
Whittingham and his team deserve all the credit for not only spotting these talented players but also making the right moves. They are competing against some of the best programs in the country, and despite their forgettable run last season, they are holding strong in the recruitment market.
Michigan’s Recruiting Has Been Unmatched
The program went through a rough phase, so they needed someone to stabilize the environment. Whittingham, known for his culture-building in Utah, was the right choice for the Michigan Wolverines.
What he has managed to do so far is beyond what most people thought at the end of last season.
“Basically, we haven’t kind of seen this type of run under the previous two coaches, Jim Harbaugh or Sherrone Moore, and it’s just continuing…It’s just it won’t stop,” MLive’s Ryan Zuke said on the Wolverine Confidential podcast.
“It’s incredible how quickly they’ve been able to build bonds with these coaches and recruits across the country when many people probably didn’t think that,” he added.
The quick turnaround by Whittingham and his team is giving hope to Michigan fans for next season.
