Despite winning a long-drawn litigious battle with the NCAA over his final-year college eligibility, quarterback Brendan Sorsby will now join the NFL supplemental draft after parting ways with the Texas Tech Raiders earlier this week.
With the supplemental draft expected to take place between mid and late July, there are no doubts surrounding the NFL-bound players’ talent on the field.
ESPN NFL analyst Louis Riddick, in an appearance on The Jim Rome Show on Friday, sang praises of Sorsby’s overall physicality. The Texas Tech signal-caller’s footballing ability also prompted Riddick to draw comparisons with Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford.
“Look, he’s got tremendous physical tools. There’s no question about that. You’re talking about height, weight, speed, mobility, functional mobility, arm angles, horsepower in his arm, the ability to throw with touch and velocity, throw outside the pocket. He’s got all of that,” Riddick said.
“We showed some clips of that on TV just a couple days ago at ESPN, And it really does give you some Matthew Stafford slash Patrick Mahomes vibes in terms of the way in which he can always get the ball off, even if he isn’t on platform and it is ideal,” he added.
On the technical front, the analyst further emphasized how Sorsby’s ability to pick up hidden and off-schedule yardage is as good as that of some of the top quarterbacks in the league.
These bold comparisons further give credence to the buzz surrounding Sorsby, with all 32 NFL teams reportedly slated to be present at his July 10 pro day to assess his progress.
How Does the NFL Supplemental Draft Order Work?
While it’s not every day that players opt for the supplemental draft, the entire bidding process could seem a little confusing.
Essentially, all the teams partaking in this special selection process would be classified into three tiers based on their previous season’s performance. Tier 1 teams, who have won six or fewer games in the past campaign, would be given the highest priority in the draft, while tier two (remaining non-playoff teams) and tier three (playoff teams) would be placed next in line.
Now, if two teams bid for a player in the same round, the team higher on the supplemental draft priority list will end up with the prospect.
The last time a player was selected via the supplemental route was the Arizona Cardinals’ fifth-round pick, safety Jalen Thompson, in 2019.
