Mark Pope has had a rough 12 hours. Kentucky was touted to land Tyran Stokes for next season. Most reports, rumors and speculations suggested that the team had Stokes in the bag. However, that was not the case. Tyran Stokes committed to Kansas and the Wildcats were sort of left red faced at the end.
Not only Stokes but the transfer portal has also been difficult for Mark Pope and Kentucky. Robert Wright III rejected Kentucky and withdrew from the transfer portal to return to BYU.
Donnie Freeman chose Rick Pitino’s St. John’s after visiting Kentucky. Sebastian Rancik also committed to Florida State instead of Kentucky. And most recently the college basketball world saw Tyran Stokes picking Kansas over Kentucky.
However, Mark Pope isn’t giving up just yet. He is adamant to make Kentucky into a contender for next season. He is currently on his way to meet a possible suitor for the Wildcats. Reportedly, Pope is flying to Israel to meet with Maccabi Tel Aviv center Marcio Santos.
This seemingly looks like a move in answer to the disappointment from Tyran Stokes’ commitment announcement. More than anything, the timing of the visit seems like a proactive and moving on approach from Mark Pope.
Marcio Santos is a 6-foot-8 center of Brazilian origin. He has been playing for the Maccabi Tel Aviv since last year. The 23-year-old star declared for the NBA draft in 2023 but went undrafted.
Kentucky’s Entries From Transfer Portal
While the transfer portal was far from ideal for Kentucky, there is still a bit of silver lining. The Wildcats added six new players while retaining Malachi Moreno, Braydon Hawthorne, Kam Williams, Trent Noah, and Reece Potter.
They had to go to their Plan B and C in the transfer portal. Senegalese Ousmane N’Diaye and James Madison transfer Justin McBride were two forwards who joined the Wildcats.
Four guards in Zoom Diallo, Alex Wilkins, Mason Williams and Zyon Hawthorne also committed to Mark Pope’s cause.
