“Big Addition”: Fans Believe Marcus Spears Jr. is Reclassifying to 2026 Amid Mark Pope’s Mystery Phone Call During Interview

Mark Pope is actively scouting new recruits ahead of the new season, with some space on the Kentucky roster still available. Moreover, with the injury trouble the Wildcats suffered last time, having a strong and deep squad might prove to be imperative as a challenge for the SEC crown commences later this year. And many believe he could be boosted by the reclassification of Marcus Spears Jr. to 2026.

For context, Spears Jr. is the no. 1 recruit in the class of 2027, and Kentucky has already been trying to recruit the teenager, but recent reports have suggested that the youngster could be reclassifying to 2026, and fans seem to have found a pattern via a mysterious phone call.

After Travis Branham’s update, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Mark Pope received a curious phone call during his interview with Kentucky Sports Radio, where Pope said “ooh that’s important. I’ll call him right back,” leading to speculation it could be from Marcus Spears Jr. Not everyone seems convinced he’s coming to Kentucky, but it makes for a compelling case.

Mark Pope on How He’s Dealing With Criticism

While Marcus Spears Jr. would be a great get for Mark Pope, he has had to deal with a lot of stick from the Big Blue Nation (BBN) after missing out on key recruits earlier in the off-season. In the same interview with KSR, he explained how he’s dealing with the criticism.

“ 100%. Like, one thing, guys, is like I know exactly what Kentucky is. I mean, I’m probably right now the world’s expert on Kentucky basketball. I know exactly what it is and, and I’m learning how to navigate the challenge better and better every single day, as we all are. But our standard is never gonna change. It’s what makes this place great, and the way we chase it is never gonna change, and our care is never gonna change,” Pope said.

“And so it’s all part of the gig, like it is every single day. It’s all part of the gig, and it’s the gig that I want, more than any other gig in the world. It’s awesome,” he continued.
