Arizona Wildcats coach Tommy Lloyd has made his intentions clear with his current job, despite rumors linking him to UNC, which recently fired Hubert Davis.
On Tuesday, the North Carolina Tar Heels let go of Davis after five years of being under his tutelage. They faced an early exit from the 2026 NCAA tournament.
Given that North Carolina is one of the most storied teams in all of college basketball, several candidates are in line to take the reins at UNC. According to a post by collegiate hoops reporter Jason Scheer on his X/Twitter account, coach Lloyd was asked about his thoughts on Davis’ firing and if he was interested in moving to the Tar Heels. Lloyd affirmed that his commitment remains to Arizona.
“I already have one of the best jobs in the country. One thing we talk about in our program all the time is the ability to have full focus and be present in the moment. This team deserves my full focus. There’s not one thing that is going to knock me off my path. I am 100 percent focused on Arizona basketball and this program,” Lloyd was quoted as saying.
With Lloyd taking himself out of the North Carolina coaching job sweepstakes, the Tar Heels will have to look elsewhere for their next head coach. The program is coming off its 2025-26 season campaign, in which coach Davis led them to an overall record of 24-9 (12-6 ACC). They were eliminated from the 2026 national tournament in the first round with an 82-78 overtime loss to the VCU Rams.
The 2025-26 Arizona Wildcats Have Made It To The Sweet 16
As mentioned by Tommy Lloyd, his current goal is crystal clear: to bring home a national championship with the Arizona Wildcats. In this year’s national tournament so far, they have made it to the Sweet 16.
There, they are set to face coach John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks in the West Region on neutral grounds, the SAP Center at San Jose, California, on Thursday, March 26.
