“No One in the ACC Was Scared of Him”: Hubert Davis’ Departure Sparks “Worry” for Anonymous HC, As Per NCAA Insider

The North Carolina Tar Heels fired head coach Hubert Davis following their first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament. Davis had been the head coach of the program since 2021, initially joining as an assistant in 2012.

Davis’s departure didn’t come as a shock because the rumors were floating around for days. However, no one expected UNC to just cut him off out of nowhere. Now that he’s out, the program is looking for a suitable replacement.

While the search for the next head coach is ongoing, Davis’ current and former players have spoken about him. Those comments have been positive, but there’s also some negativity around Davis, coming from anonymous sources.

Analyst Jeff Goodman recently took to X to detail a conversation he had with an ACC coach. Goodman didn’t reveal the name, but he shared the quote that was said by the unnamed ACC coach.

“I had really hoped he was the coach forever. No one in the ACC was scared of him. I’m worried that they hire someone really good now because if you get a big-time guy at UNC, they could be right there with Duke again,” Goodman wrote.

Saying that no one feared Davis and that he should’ve stayed with UNC makes it seem like Davis’ program was about easy wins for their opponents. Some fans even called out the unnamed coach, saying it was a weak move to make statements anonymously.

Davis released a statement after being fired, and he revealed that he wanted to stay with UNC. He had no plans of leaving the program anytime soon and was proud of what they were able to build in the last five years.

Coby White on Hubert Davis’ Firing

During Davis’s time with the Tar Heels as an assistant, he worked with several athletes who are now in the NBA. Charlotte Hornets’ Coby White is one of those players. He represented the Tar Heels from 2018 to 2019.

When White was recently asked about Davis after he was fired, White said that he still has a good relationship with him and had great things to say about the former UNC coach.

“Before every (NBA) season, he reaches out to me and tells me ‘good luck,’ So I have the utmost respect for him, and I will never say anything bad about Coach Davis. You never want to see somebody lose their job,” White said.

In his statement, Davis said that he will soon get back to coaching in the near future.
