Michigan Wolverines guard Winters Grady has made a huge announcement on his future in college basketball, which has divided fans online. On Thursday, Grady decided to enter the transfer portal this offseason in the hopes of finding a new home after just one year with the Wolverines.
Grady’s decision surprised many, as he was a part of coach Dusty May‘s team that won the national championship a few days ago. Nevertheless, it seems as though the former four-star recruit in high school is seeking more opportunities, ones that may seem bigger for him in the grander scheme of things now that he has a national title to his name.
“NEWS: Michigan guard Winters Grady has entered the @TransferPortal, source told @On3. The 6-foot-6 freshman is a former four-star recruit and is represented by @momentouspartners,” @tiptonedits on Instagram captioned.
Fans did not react too kindly to Grady’s decision, and even dismissed any effect it may have on the Michigan-based program.
“Bro’s gonna pull off a Tarris Reed,” one fan claimed.

“It get cold on the bench. That’s where he was gone be next year,” another user said.

“Dusty already warned us about a player talking to an agent already. We guessed it was him. I don’t know why bro don’t want to stick around,” another fan shared.

“He definitely shouldn’t get a ring,” a user posted.

Some users defended Grady’s decision and pledged their belief in him and in his reasons for leaving the Wolverines.
“Good luck to the kid. Hope he finds a solid place to land,” one fan wrote.

“We have McKenney and Brandon McCoy at SG. McKenney will likely start and McCoy will take his place off the bench. Grady would never play. So it’s a good decision for him. I wish him well. I wouldn’t be surprised if Oscar Goodman transfers,” another fan pointed out.

“Fair enough, bro, go be great somewhere 〽️💯,” a fan commented with emojis.

Grady was part of the Michigan-based program that won the 2025-26 season. Coach May’s Wolverines made it all the way to the national championship game, where they toppled coach Dan Hurley’s UConn Huskies by six points, 69-63, on neutral grounds, the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Grady and team finished the year with an overall record of 37-3 (19-1 Big Ten).
Winters Grady Played Only Nine Games In The 2025-26 Campaign
Perhaps one of the primary reasons that Winters Grady has decided to enter this offseason’s transfer portal is that he played only nine games in the 2025-26 campaign.
The Tulatin, Oregon, native did not start in any of those games, and averaged 2.9 points and 1.1 rebounds in around 5.6 minutes per game in those nine matchups. Grady will presumably seek more playing time with a new team next season.
