It was a happy day for the Spears family as Marcus Spears Jr. announced that he will be reclassifying to 2026 and secured a commitment to the Texas Longhorns, in what is a major boost to the program as they attempt to dominate the SEC. Following the commitment, Spears Jr.’s dad, former NFL defensive lineman, Marcus Spears, has reacted to the move.
Spears took to social media platform X to react to congratulatory messages surrounding his son’s commitment, and even mentioned that he has another daughter who will be involved with college sports at some point.
Marcus Spears and his wife, former WNBA player, Aiysha Smith, have three children together. The eldest daughter, Cari Spears, was born in 2007 and has been a top volleyball player, committing to the Texas Longhorns and currently plies her trade there. Marcus Spears Jr. is the middle child and has also just committed to Texas, while the youngest child is Miko Spears, and as Marcus Spears put it, is also preparing for an eventual run in the sport of volleyball.
Marcus Spears Jr. Was the No. 1 Ranked Recruit in the 2027 Class
Marcus Spears Jr. was already set for big things in 2027, the no. 1 ranked player in his class and a five-star recruit that many programs had their eyes on, but he explained why Texas was the right place for him after his commitment.
“Texas basketball is becoming a big thing again, and I am excited to be part of it,” Spears said to ESPN. “The Texas fans can expect a worker with a lot of energy. I will be trying to bring Texas a national championship.”
Marcus Spears himself spoke about his son’s ties to Texas and why this is like home for him.
“Marcus Jr. grew up in Texas, and there’s nothing like playing for your home school and winning,” Spears added. “I experienced that growing up in Louisiana at LSU. This is his decision and his future.”
