Former NFL defensive lineman Marcus Spears was a happy man after his son announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns and reclassified to 2026, despite being the No. 1 player in the Class of 2027. As good as Marcus Spears Jr. has been, criticism hasn’t escaped him either, but at least he has his dad to stand up for him.
After a fan posted a tweet wondering what made Spears Jr. so special that he felt reclassifying to 2026 was the right move, father Spears chimed in with a sarcastic comment that was clearly aimed at defending his son.
To his credit, the individual who initially directed the criticism at Spears Jr. made it clear that he wasn’t trying to hate on the teenager, just asking a valid question he hoped someone could answer.
Marcus Spears Jr. And His Dad Open Up About Texas Longhorns Commitment
Following the announcement of Spears Jr. that Texas was his destination, he explained why he joined the program over other offers.
“Texas basketball is becoming a big thing again, and I am excited to be part of it,” Spears Jr. told ESPN. “The Texas fans can expect a worker with a lot of energy. I will be trying to bring Texas a national championship.”
Spears Sr. himself gave some valuable input about why Texas was the right call for his son despite offers from other programs, including the Kentucky Wildcats.
“Marcus Jr. grew up in Texas, and there’s nothing like playing for your home school and winning,” Spears explained. “I experienced that growing up in Louisiana at LSU. This is his decision and his future.”
