Weeks after Dusty May’s surprising switch to the NBA, Michigan has finally decided to end its coaching search and hand the keys to the program to former assistant head coach Mike Boynton.
Boynton, who served under Dusty May for two seasons as an assistant and defensive co-ordinator, will now lead the reigning national champions into the 2026-27 season.
Boynton has mainly served as an assistant for several programs throughout his coaching career, including Coastal Carolina, Wofford, South Carolina, Oklahoma State, and Stephen F. Austin, besides the Michigan gig.
As news of Boynton’s reported hiring spread across social media, fans took to the comments to make their opinions very clear on Dusty May’s successor.
One fan opined that hiring Boynton was not the right call and the team shouldn’t have rushed in removing his interim coach tag just yet.
Another fan claimed that Boynton will fall short in replicating May’s success at Michigan:

Mike Boynton’s Coaching Career So Far
While Boynton made history for South Carolina in his playing days, making 129 3-pointers in his four-year career, good for top-ten all-time in South Carolina history, his coaching career hasn’t seen any such significant milestones outside the Michigan stint.
As the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Boynton managed to earn a 119-109 record, getting to the quarterfinals of the NIT in his first season back in 2018. Boynton then repeated the same feat in 2023, reaching the same stage.
Boynton also achieved a Round of 32 berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2021, when the team had future two-time NBA All-Star Cade Cunningham as the team’s primary star.
While Dusty May’s departure came as a surprise, Boynton has been successful in keeping Michigan’s roster intact through the 15-day transfer portal window. With multiple four and five stars on the roster, Boynton will be expected to replicate his 2021 success with the defending national champs.
