Rick Pitino’s Latest Recruit Makes Feelings Very Clear On St. John’s Commitment

Rick Pitino might’ve found the next big star of the St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball program. Pitino has had a successful run over the last two seasons with the Red Storm and is headed toward the ultimate prize in college basketball.

Last season, Pitino’s team finished 30-7 overall, including 18-2 in the conference. The Red Storm made it to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. With a new four-star recruit, Pitino can make a run at the title.

Theo Edema, a 7-footer out of Cushing Academy, committed to the Red Storm and will reclassify to 2026. Edema had offers from Stanford, Maryland, BYU, Auburn, Creighton, Syracuse, and others.

Edema recently had a conversation with Rivals where he was asked about committing to the Red Storm and the opportunity to play for Rick Pitino.

“It was the coaching, culture, and opportunity. Coach P has proven to develop players into the next level, and also he has won on the highest level. I also felt that the whole coaching staff believe in me and will make me better,” he said.

Edema heaped praise on Coach Pitino, stating that there’s so much that he can learn from him. The main focus for Edema as he embarks on a new journey is learning about leadership, discipline, preparation, and consistency.

“He’s coached at every level and has helped a lot of players reach their full potential. Being around someone with that experience pushes you to improve every day and learn how to approach the game like a professional,” he added.

Edema has the potential to be the next great talent that Pitino could develop at his program. He is very young and has the necessary frame and athleticism to be a world-class basketball player.

Rick Pitino’s System is the Right Fit for Theo Edema

Pitino’s teams have thrived when they’ve had the defensive advantage, which includes creating pressure, rim protection, rebounding, and more. Edema’s addition to the squad will guarantee that next season.

Edema believes that his game will fit right into the Red Storm’s system.

“I think my game will fit because I play hard on both ends of the floor, competing, and making winning plays. I also think my versatility and willingness to defend, run the floor, and make plays for my teammates can help me succeed in the style of play,” he said.

The talent and potential are undeniable, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pitino helps Edema develop over the next few years.
