Without a doubt, the Kentucky Wildcats are considered one of the biggest and most recognizable programs in college basketball, even being considered as one of the blue blood schools along with schools like Duke and North Carolina. However, are the Wildcats actually the biggest brand in college basketball? Head coach Mark Pope thinks so.
“Yes. We’re the biggest brand in basketball,” he said.
He said this regarding his recruits over at Kentucky leveraging the fact that his program is one of the biggest brands in college basketball. However, during the recent high school recruiting cycle, Kentucky had struggled, most notably failing to land No. 1 recruit Tyran Stokes, a Kentucky native and Nike athlete, losing him to Adidas school, Kansas. With that, fans quickly poked fun at Pope’s claim.
“Yeah we used to be , now we the laughing stock with you at the helm !,” one Wildcats fan pointed out.
“False Kentucky is not the biggest brand in basketball that’s 100% false,” said another person.
“Lmao!!🤣🤣, 💩🐂. Not even close anymore. 50 years ago maybe. Nobody wanted to even take that job after they ran Cal off, guess good thing for Pope. He’ll be fired at the end of next season.,” another commenter predicted.
“Kentucky is quickly becoming the laughing stock of college basketball. PLEASE buy out his contract and allow the new athletic director to hold a coaching g search to see who might want to return UK to a quality program.” another UK fan added.
“I’m as big of a Kentucky fan as they come but let’s be real…. We aren’t even top 5, and not even the biggest brand in the state.” noted one fan.
“*were*. It’s not been that way in quite awhile. Cal propped up UK’s status with his NBA minor leagues recruiting.,” said another.
As fans had noted, Kentucky had been dominant under John Calipari. When he left and Mark Pope took over, the team had not been the same and even struggled in recruiting.
Mark Pope Addresses Failure To Recruit Tyran Stokes
His failure to deliver on Tyran Stokes had been one of Mark Pope’s biggest failures as head coach, which saw yet another year where his program lagged in recruitment. During a Q&A session on X, he addressed the situation and tried to spin it in a positive light:
“We were chasing a generational talent, and we fell a little short, but we weren’t sitting on our hands. We put together a roster that we are gonna love watching crush it in Rupp Arena.”
When John Calipari was still with Kentucky, the Wildcats constantly had No. 1-ranked recruiting classes. This year under Mark Pope, he has only managed to sign four-star point guard Mason Williams, with Kentucky being ranked the No. 63 recruiting class.
