St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino has spoken out after the program’s interim general manager, Tom Ostrom, left the team after a few months in charge during a crucial period for the Red Storm.
Pitino took to the social media platform X to thank Ostrom for his work during the few months he was around and also recognized that he “refused to take a penny” for the job.
Rick Pitino wrote: “Thank you to Tom Ostrom for giving so much energy in helping us build our roster. Worked tirelessly for months and refused to take a penny. Saying he’s a special man, doesn’t do him justice. Thx Tom and the Johnnies thank you 👏🏻👏🏻.”
Tom Ostrom was appointed interim GM of the St. John’s Red Storm after the program relieved former GM Matt Abdelmassih of his duties in January, following an in-depth look at the financial decisions made during his tenure, which clearly did not live up to expectations.
Division 1 assistant coach Tom Ostrom was brought in soon after, with Rick Pitino giving him a glowing reception at the time.
“Tommy is going to get us through this recruiting period, and if he wants it full-time, he’s going to let us know,” Pitino told The New York Post.
“If he wants the job full-time, he has it.”
How are St. John’s Looking in the Offseason?
While the GM situation continues to be an emerging situation, St. John’s is definitely moving forward in its preparation for the new season.
Most notably, Rick Pitino has been able to bring in Tounde Yessoufou to the Red Storm in a major transfer portal move. Yessoufou had been linked with several teams after he decided to withdraw from the NBA draft on deadline day, but chose to work with Pitino for the time he has left in college.
The team also added former Syracuse forward Donnie Freeman and former G League forward prospect Babacar Sane.
