Mark Pope has been with the Kentucky Wildcats for two seasons. He has led them to the Round of 32 and Sweet 16, but it’s not been good enough for Kentucky fans.
The upcoming season could be Pope’s biggest yet, but he has a challenging schedule to navigate. The Wildcats are slated to face Kansas, which pipped Kentucky to the commitment of Tyran Stokes. Three other official matchups for Kentucky are Indiana, North Carolina and Louisville. Kentucky could also face Miami next season.
An analyst for KSR recently broke down the matchups and claimed it could be a make-or-break season for Pope.
“Since we all agree this is going to be a huge season for Mark Pope, let’s just talk for a second about what this schedule is going to look like because I do think it’s going to be very interesting,” he said. “Just imagine you’re coaching for your job. What if I told you the first big game you’re going to play this year is against the team who took the player people wanted you to get. If you win, that’s great, but if you don’t, there you go. It’s an all-or-nothing situation.
“If you’re just talking about a season where Pope can define the narrative about him, it’s hard to find one with more storylines. You couldn’t get a more…storyline schedule,” he added.
The matchup with Kansas will be interesting. Pope tried his best to sign Tyran Stokes, a five-star recruit and the top-ranked player of the 2026 class. However, Kansas jumped in and got Stokes to commit to its program over Kentucky.
Mark Pope’s Kentucky to Join the Diamond Cup
The Diamond Cup will be a new early-season tournament featuring some of the best programs in the country. The event is still in its early stages, but some teams are nearly guaranteed to participate.
As per KSR’s Jack Pilgrim, Kentucky is expected to be a part of the high-profile event. In addition to Kentucky, the Diamond Cup will feature North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, UConn, Gonzaga, and Kansas.
In the two-game setup in 2027-28, schools will reportedly receive $2.25 million apiece. If the tournament expands to a four-game format, schools will reportedly earn $3.75 million.
