Amid High Drama, Kelvin Sampson Comments on Bill Self’s Handling of Darryn Peterson

Darryn Peterson and the Kansas Jayhawks will host the Houston Cougars at Allen Fieldhouse for their matchup today. Bill Self’s team has had some struggles recently, mainly because of Peterson’s absence.

Despite that, the Jayhawks are a very strong team, and if we add Peterson to the lineup, they can be a threat to any team in the league. Cougars head coach Kelvin Sampson understands that, and he spoke highly of Peterson and Self ahead of their game.

In a video posted by Chancellor Johnson on X, Sampson talks about the upcoming trip to Kansas, Self, and how he handles his top player. Sampson heaped praise on the Jayhawks head coach for doing a great job developing a talent like Peterson.

“The way Bill uses his though is more like the way Tennessee used Chaz Lanier last year,” Sampson said. “He’s a big, strong kid.”

While Peterson deserves all the praise and he’s expected to be a top draft pick this year, he has been missing out on a lot of games recently. Even when he laces up for the Jayhawks, Peterson ends up leaving the court early.

This has become a pattern over the last few weeks, and he has been called out for the same. Self, on the other hand, has stated that his team is now learning how to play without Peterson.

“One thing about it is [cramping] has happened enough that our guys have learned to play without him, even though that’s not the way we want to play,” he said.

The cramping issue that he has been dealing with has become a recurring thing during his outings. Many believe he’s trying to protect his draft stock, while others are claiming this is hurting his reputation.

Insider Shared His Thoughts on Darryn Peterson’s Strategy

Peterson has played just 16 games this season, averaging 27.2 minutes per outing. During the game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, he dropped 23 points, 20 of which were in the first half. Peterson left the game at the beginning of the second half.

After that, Jeff Goodman shared his thoughts on the recent trend and explained how it’s hurting him more than he realizes.

“Here’s what makes this Darryn Peterson situation even worse. Peterson and his camp have offered no real explanation on what’s going on all season. It’s called terrible PR. Just come out and explain the situation because obviously Bill Self has been and still is trying to protect the kid,” he wrote.

It’ll be interesting to see if Peterson plays against Houston tonight. More importantly, how many minutes will he spend on the floor?
