Kansas Jayhawks, after an eight-win game streak earlier this season, have now lost two of their last three games, massively affecting their post-regular season chances. They now sit fourth in the Big 12 with a conference record of 10-4 and an overall record of 20-7.
Part of their recent poor run of games could be attributed to their prodigal freshman guard Darryn Peterson’s minutes on the court. Touted by many as a no. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA draft, there are no doubts surrounding his hooping talent. However, his recent on-court antics, which involve tanking his game minutes by asking to be subbed out, have raised a lot of eyebrows lately.
Legendary ESPN analyst and American basketball sportscaster Dick Vitale is the most recent name to have broken his silence on the entire Darryn Peterson situation, asking the entire “soap opera” to end.
The former Detroit Pistons head coach also opined that it’s about time the Kansas-based program and Peterson call it quits, whilst also acknowledging that moving away from each other may not be as bad as it’s been made to seem at times.
“Sometimes a divorce is good for everyone involved & I firmly believe that needs to happen NOW @KUHoops– the Darryn Peterson soap opera needs to end .It has to be a nightmare for ALL involved- so sad as Darryn’s talent is off the charts“, Vitale wrote on X.
In his most recent outing against the Cincinnati Bearcats, Peterson only featured for a total of 32 minutes as the Jayhawks lost that game with a scoreline of 84-68. Perhaps the outcome could have been different had Peterson stuck around for longer.
Boogie Cousins Calls Out Darryn Peterson’s On Court Antics
Reacting to the Peterson-Kansas debacle, Vitale’s not the first person to propose a potential split-up between the parties. Former Sacramento Kings and Team USA center DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins has spoken about Peterson and his on-court antics.
Cousins did not hold back in calling out Peterson, asking him to “take that bullshit somewhere else,” whilst also sympathizing for his fellow Kansas Jayhawks teammates.
“If I’m his teammate, I’m pissed, especially if we going for a national championship”, Cousins stated.
“If Darryn Peterson is my teammate, I’m absolutely saying something. Either you with us or you not.Like, take that bullsh*t somewhere else”, he further called out Peterson.
Perhaps Peterson’s unwillingness to stay on court for a prolonged period comes from a place of complacency, knowing he will be one of the higher draft picks, if not first. In the 16 games featured for the Kansas-based program, he has averaged a mere 29.433 minutes on court.
