Jon Scheyer’s Duke Blue Devils enter the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. Duke had a 32-2 overall run, including 17-1 in the conference. They remained unbeaten at home after 15 matchups and won the ACC Tournament for the second year in a row.
The big question about Duke now is whether they will continue their dominant run in the NCAA Tournament as well. While the stats show that they have the potential, not everyone agrees that the Blue Devils will have a good run.
Recently, CBS Sports’ BJ Taylor was asked which 1 seed team will lose first. In his opinion, the Blue Devils will be the first to fall. Taylor believes that there are problems that they haven’t addressed, and they depend on their star player more than they should.
“I think you have to start with probably Duke because of the injury situation,” he said. “Saying that they’re flawed is not due to their style of play or what they’ve done this season, or you look at them as a group.”
Taylor stated that players’ unavailability will be a major hurdle for Duke as they kickstart the NCAA Tournament. Injuries to point guard Caleb Foster and big man Patrick Ngongba will trouble them in games.
The Blue Devils aren’t dynamic at the back court, and they depend too much on Cameron Boozer to lead the offense. Boozer has been averaging 22.5 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game this season.
His contributions are impressive, and it’s understandable why the Blue Devils rely on him so much. However, Taylor believes that the team depends on him for creating the majority of their offense, and that’s not what a strong team should do.
Jon Scheyer on Duke’s No. 1 Overall Seed
After the announcement on Selection Sunday, Scheyer said that this was the position the team worked really hard for throughout the season. Scheyer was proud of his team for earning their spot in the tournament bracket.
“We talk about being present every day and then we also talk about just what comes with the great parts comes with how to handle the distractions. I would call them distractions because just there’s a lot of attention on it and that’s exactly what you want it to be,” he said.
Scheyer also talked about Cayden Boozer, who has stepped in after Foster’s injury. He said that he has been playing in “crunch time,” but he was confident that Boozer could take the responsibility if the team needed him.
